W2 Research is a boutique research and development firm building AI/ML-powered small-scale robotics for exploration and defense. It is the firm’s largest marine position. Baculum Capital Management is its lead investor, and a partner of the firm sits on its board.
The firm backs companies that use AI to solve hard physical problems. W2 Research holds two convictions the firm shares: the sea is the next frontier for exploration, and the future of defense is in the hands of small, autonomous systems.
WHY SMALL, WHY THE SEA
An aerial drone must stay aloft to stay in play. A naval drone need only stay still. A small system on the seabed can sleep for weeks on a commodity microcontroller drawing on the order of ten microamps, and wake on a timer or a sound. Radio does not propagate through seawater, so a sleeping system cannot be called, and therefore cannot be found by calling.
The same small system that listens to a reef for a season can listen to a strait for a season. That is the dual-use case in one sentence. See Blue Water and Littoral Autonomy.
